Published Saturday 29th May 2021 Aber welcomed Ardal South side Monmouth Town for their latest pre-season friendly and despite riding their luck at times it was a crazy six minute spell that ultimately cost them in this game. Aberdare did well in the opening exchanges but Amenye Ndele had to be alert to clear off his own line after a towering header from a right sided corner. Aber were knocking the ball around well against their higher league opposition and on 14 minutes some excellent build up play that started from the back saw Will Eastwood cross from the left after a glorious through ball by Abs Camara but the visiting ‘keeper reacted well to gather the ball with two Aber forwards lurking. Monmouth should have taken the lead moments later as a striker rounded Joe Regan in the Aberdare goal but delayed his shot just long enough for Simon Grmay to block and then Regan gathered the second shot with ease. Regan then went on to make several key saves and blocks to keep the scores level. At the other end Aberdare were pressing too and despite some intricate build-up couldn’t find any clear scoring chances for themselves however a stunning 20 yard effort from Ryan Boulton saw the visiting ‘keeper save superbly tipping over the bar at full stretch. Just before the break Noah Searl volleyed from just outside the box which went for a corner and from the resulting set piece Eastwood saw a chance blocked and Liam Pryor smashed the loose ball past the far post. Both Eastwood and Jon Harding had penalty shouts turned away before Regan ended the half with another excellent save and the visitors hitting the upright. There was plenty of optimism after the first half against their higher opponents but they came crashing back down to earth within six minutes of the second half starting as the visitors notched three times. All three were well worked goals but Aber will have felt they could have done better with them. A fourth really well taken goal on 75 minutes gave Monmouth a convincing lead but Aber didn’t let their heads drop and kept searching for a way through and on 81 minutes their persistence deservedly paid off and it turned out to be the goal of the game. Daz Mandaza set up Eastwood whose shot was pushed around the post by the keeper and from the resulting corner it was only cleared as far as the edge of the area where an acrobatic overhead kick flew into the top corner of the net. Our thanks go to Monmouth for travelling up to us for the game and we wish them all the best for the season ahead. The Harrent Properties Player of the Match: Joe Regan
