Aberdare Town are seeking to appoint a new Club Secretary ahead of the new season following the sad news that David Sweet will be stepping down from the role. Due to a successful promotion at work and a much higher workload, which will include traveling away from home, sadly this means that he won’t have enough time to dedicate to his existing role. Dai initially joined the Club as a volunteer taking videos and photos back in the summer of 2019 before being co-opted onto the Committee in January 2020 in the role of vice-chairman. Within a matter of months he had taken on the position of Club Secretary which he has made his own since then, overseeing a difficult period of the Club but has been an integral part of helping steady the ship and getting Aberdare heading back in the right direction. Chairman Garry Williams said of the news: “The whole committee, and the Club as a whole, were sad to hear of Dave’s decision but we all completely understand his reasoning. A Club Secretary gets through so much work behind the scenes that is unseen by the majority of people but without his input there wouldn’t be football at the Club from our youngest age groups through to the seniors each week. “The Club is now on a much more stable footing because of the work he has undertaken and although he won’t be involved in the day to day running of ATFC he isn’t leaving the Club entirely and will still be seen around whenever he is able to. “On behalf of everybody involved with Aberdare Town I would like to thank Dai for all his work over the last five years and wish him, Tessa and Jack well for the future”. On his departure Dai responded: “I’m incredibly sad to be stepping down, just as the club is on an upward trajectory, but work commitments mean it’s impossible to devote the time and energy I have given these past 5 years and that is why I am stepping down with effect from 30 June 2024. “All the pieces are in place for the next secretary to take on and run with: ‘Kickers’ - our under 5 football provision, a thriving mini section, a junior and youth football section of boys and girls teams with tremendous potential for the future and a senior men’s team that is well positioned for success in 24/25 and beyond, with what I consider to be the best manager below the Cymru South. “To my fellow committee members who I am grateful to be able to call my friends as well as colleagues; thank you for your support, guidance, patience and for keeping my feet on the ground. “To our coaches and volunteers; thank you for the countless hours you put in for your teams, your players and your club. You do far more than ‘just coach football’ and that has never been overlooked. The impact you make on your players’ lives cannot be measured but will last a lifetime and I’m grateful to have been able to help you do the wonderful job you do. “To our players, from those in Kickers to the lads in the Men’s team, each time I see one of you in our shirt it fills me with pride and hope. The hope that only a football fan can feel, the hope that one day the player in that jersey will lift a trophy wearing our badge and I hope you all get to experience that joy. “My time with the club has been a tremendous privilege; to watch so many players come through the age groups and play in the first team, to help provide football for children of all abilities and to play a small part in the long history of the club is a reward that someone else can now enjoy. “Whilst I’ll still be around on senior match days, and it will always be “my” club, it’s now someone else’ turn to bring fresh energy and new ideas to take this grand old club back to the next level, where it belongs!” Men’s team manager Ryan Betteney commented on the news by saying: “A huge shame to see Dave step down as Secretary of the club, but I understand it’s a time consuming and thankless task. He’s been instrumental in all the good things since I have been here that’s for sure and he will be a huge loss to the club, but from purely a selfish perspective hopefully it can release some time to support us on a Saturday afternoon. He won’t get away with it that easy!” APPLICATIONS We are now seeking applications for the post of Club Secretary to take over as of 1st July 2024. Applicants need to be organised, computer literate, good communicator and a team player. This role is a voluntary position.
