Match report by Ian Pearce Aberdare Town put last weeks disappointing home defeat to Dinas Powys to bed with a committed and passioned display against the league leaders Monmouth Town. As always with squads this season there were enforced changes through unavailabilty and there was also the welcome return of Levi Jones who re-signed from Trethomas. After a few nice days of weather the Monmouth pitch had already started to firm up and was uneven in places making control difficult at times for both sides. It   was   a   quiet   opening   half   to   the   game   with   little   in   the   way   of   chances   at   either   end   of   the   pitch   although   Monmouth   had   the   largest   share   of   possession   they   didn’t   really   create many clear cut openings while Aberdare looked good on the break. Aber   ‘keeper   Callum   Dunning   has   quickly   turned   into   a   Club   hero   with   some   confident   goalkeeping   that   meant   both   teams   went   in   level   at   the   break   as   he   saved   well   low   down   and then tipping over a header from a corner. Aberdare   almost   got   themselves   ahead   on   35   minutes   as   a   ball   through   the   defence   by   Fenaroli   saw   Rhys   Thomas   clean   through   on   goal   and   he   tried   to   lob   the   advancing   keeper but it wasn’t quiet high enough and the giant custodian stuck out a hand to deny him his first goal of the season. Monmouth   then   missed   a   golden   chance   of   their   own   as   a   right   wing   cross   found   an   advancing   midfielder   who   only   had   Dunning   to   beat   8   yards   out   but   he   couldn’t   direct   his   effort goalwards and it flew well wide. Half Time: Monmouth Town 0-0 Aberdare Town Monmouth   weren’t   showing   the   style   you   would   come   to   expect   from   a   table   topping   side   and   the   traveling Aberdare   faithful   had   thoughts   of   snatching   an   unlikely   first   victory   on   the road. On   50   minutes   Matt   Owen   sent   a   25   yard   shot   wide   of   the   post   and   then   Brad   Lewis   drove   towards   goal   after   coming   in   from   the   left   but   the   keeper   managed   to   get   his   giant   frame down to save. Thomas   then   went   close   as   he   was   set   free   on   the   left,   he   cut   into   the   area   and   sent   a   curling   effort   goalwards   which   was   saved,   the   loose   ball   was   retrieved   by Adam   Jones   and Scott Philpott set up Owen who smashed a shot inches wide. It   was   a   golden   spell   for Aberdare   but   as   so   often   happens   when   you   are   at   the   bottom   of   the   table   it   was   during   this   spell   that   Monmouthn   took   the   led   as   Dunning   saved   well   from a 30 yard snap shot and the resulting corner saw a bout of pin ball in the area as the ball wasn’t cleared and a close range headed effort nestled in the back of the net. A   double   change   saw   Cory   Thomas   and   Craig   Williams   on   to   replace   Rhys   Thomas   and Adam   Jones   and   it   was   Williams   who   went   close   to   bringing   the   scores   back   level   as   his shot from the left of the area went wide of the target at the far post. In   stoppage   time   the   hosts   had   a   goal   ruled   out   for   offside   and   with   the   last   kick   of   the   game   Owen   had   another   chance   to   salvage   a   point   as   he   nearly   managed   to   sneak   a   shot inside the near post but the ball was tipped behind and with the resulting corner cleared it brought an end to the contest.
