It was another game where you could say “what might have been” for Aberdare Town. After   defensive   errors   left Aber   3-1   down   at   half-time,   a   stirring   second   half   performance   could   easily   have   resulted   in   at   least a draw. With   Terry   Fitzpatrick   returning   to   the   dugbut   after   a   period   of   isolation   after   contracting   COVID,   he   made   several   changes   to the team that had been beaten comprehensively by Merthyr Saints just a few days earlier. In   came   Aaron   Rees   for   a   first   start,   Dan   Cushion   and   Niall   Jones   came   back   into   the   lineup   while   Aaran   Finlayson   had   to settle for a place on the bench and there was no Abs Camara or Ibby Djilla to contend with. On   the   bench   there   was   a   place   for   Dan   Simms   and   Amenye   Ndele   who   had   been   absent   so   far   this   season   due   to   work commitments. A visit to 2019/20 champions Pencoed Athletic, who were denied promotion by ground grading rules was likely to be tough. Temporarily   playing   at   Penybont   on   an   artificial   pitch,   the   hosts   took   a   9th   minute   lead   when   Liam   Pryor   blocked   an   attempt only for David Lavers to tap home the rebound. Just   like   against   Saints   three   days   earlier   it   didn’t   take   long   for   Aber   to   get   straight   back   on   level   terms.   Two   minutes   after falling behind a fine attack left Aaron Rees to beat the Pencoed keeper at his near post.

Immediately   after   Pencoed   got   the   game   back   underway   another Aber   attack   saw   the   ball   played   into   the   6   yard   box   and   a great chance was stabbed wide. On   23   minutes,   after   an   unnecessary   corner,   had   been   conceeded,   the   ball   was   not   cleared   despite   several   attempts allowing Lavers to score his second.  Yusuf Ali   then   had   a   curling   attempt   headed   behind   by   a   Pencoed   defender   before,   on   38   minutes,   a   left   wing   raid   saw   Pryor unable to hold the shot for Richard Lewis to put Pencoed 3-1 up. going into the break. The second half saw Aber against a strong wind but, to their credit, staged a superb second half performance. Making use of their 5 permitted substitutes, and creating several excellent openings. Aber   attacked   with   increasing   belief   when   3   good   chances   were   not   taken   which   could   easily   have   meant   a   different outcome to this encounter. Pencoed relied on counter attacks which resulted in offsides and two good stops by Pryor. Sadly time ran out on Aberdare’s efforts for their fourth straight league defeat. Mistakes and missed chances are the story so far. The team never gave up but found that this league is ruthless.
