Match report by Ray Pearce Picture by Beth Kelly A first half that saw Aberdare concede three goals proved a step to far in an FAW Trophy defeat away to Alliance Premier Division side Ton Pentre despite a spirited second half showing. A 4-3 Aberdare win in a pre-season friendly gave the team confidence, however, the home side had enjoyed a 5-0 win in their first league match and, no doubt, were out for revenge. Pleasant sunshine greeted the Aberdare contingent as the game started at a quick pace. 12 minutes on the clock saw Ton Pentre take the lead with a close range effort from Price. On 20 minutes a right hand side corner was headed home by Welsh to establish a 2-0 lead. Aberdare continued to try to play their flowing football but corners and free kicks in their favour did not trouble the home defence unduly. A near miss for the visitors came on 29 minutes when a rasping drive hit the post. Unfortunately, after an Aber effort had gone just over, a 43rd minute free-kick from the home team's right was headed home for 3-0 despite Aber's protestations that 'keeper Callum Dunning had been impeded. The away support were hoping for an improvement from their side and it duly came on 50 minutes. Player of the Match Evan Olson struck a superb drive from outside the penalty area after a solo run to notch Aber's opener. Ton Pentre seemed to be happy to thwart Aber's attacks as Leon Jacka's 67th minute shot was parried by the home number 1. Dunning did likewise to stop a home counter attack. It was almost a second on 70 minutes for the visitors as Jacka's attempt was palmed onto his bar by Ton Pentre's custodian. Despite playing some nice approach work, there were no further serious attempts as Aberdare exited another cup competition. Obvious disappointment for all concerned with Aberdare. Next Saturday (2nd September) sees the first home league game when entertaining AFC Wattstown at 2.30pm.
