Match report by Ray Pearce Picture by Beth Kelly Town bounced back from last weeks opening day narrow defeat with an excellent performance away to Merthyr Saints with four goals and the all important three points. Aber were missing Owen Jones through illness but welcomed back Callum Dunning in goal, after missing last weeks game, Aaron Rowling came back into midfield and Shay Welch started at full back. Our last two visits to the ICI Rifle Ground had ended in seven goal defeats which they were looking to put right. On a mercifully dry afternoon but with a swirling wind, Aber had an early Connor Berry chance from a header which went wide. Certrus Construction Player of the Match, Welch then cleared off his own line on 3 minutes. Just 8 minutes into the game a Leon Jacka corner was not dealt with by the home side and Dan Collins put in the first goal with the home 'keeper not able to keep it out and helping it into the net. Aberdare forced several corners which came to nothing while Merthyr retaliated with some attacks down their right which needed careful attention by Aber's back line. The hosts continued to press Aber's confident passing game, resulting in some heart-stopping moments for the away contingent but Dunning was rarely troubled as half-time saw a 1-0 lead maintained. An early second half penalty appeal from Merthyr was waved away, the follow up going well over. Home pressure told after 53 minutes when Ben Davies skipped through the away defenders to smash into the roof of the net. At this stage it looked like "game on but, just 10 minutes later, Sam Weaver passed to Jacka who played in substitute Evan Olson for a cool finish and a 2-1 lead for Aber. Merthyr raids seemed to die out and, on 78 minutes an away attempt was handled on the home line. Dismissal for the offender and Jacka sent the home number 1 the wrong way from the penalty spot for Aberdare to net their third. More was to come in the last minute of normal time as Olson was in on the right side of the penalty area and unselfishly squared for fellow substitute Harri Jones to side-foot in the fourth. A deserved win for Aberdare, enjoyed by the faithful following. Next up is an away fixture in the Trophy on Saturday 26th August at Ton Pentre with a 2.00pm start TEAM: Callum Dunning, Jordan Jones (Wilhan Pratti ‘90), Shay Welch, Sam Weaver, Morgan Rowling, Aaron Rowling, Leon Jacka © (Harri Jones ‘89), Josh Davies (Brychan Davies ‘62), Connor Berry, Dan Collins (Cameron McHale ‘86), Jayden Davies (Evan Olson ‘60)
