Report by: Ray Pearce Photos by: Beth Kelly Photography After being involved in 20 goals from their first 3 games, Aberdare welcomed Ardal South East side Newport Corinthians in a JD Welsh Cup tie. With some senior players unavailable there were 10 of the matchday squad under the age of 20 and they were to do the club proud with their efforts - with the team at the end of the game finishing with four players aged 16 - and starting the game were other 16 year olds Cam Sage and Jack Ford making their full debuts. Attacking the town end the first chance fell to Aber on 7 minutes as Harri Jones and Sage ran through but could not convert. Within 60 seconds Newport had flicked onto the Aberdare crossbar, Leon Jacka then going close with a drive and the away side also troubling the home defence. On 14 minutes a visiting shot hit the far post with the rebound blazed over.

Just before the half-hour Dan Field twice prevented an away goal with fine saves. After 33 minutes an away attack down the right was not dealt with and Newport opened the scoring from close range. Another long range Jacka effort was saved as their was no more scoring in the first half. The 50th minute saw Connor Berry down the left to gain a fruitless corner, Shay Welch being unable to continue and replaced by Southern Rowlands. 70 minutes saw Berry do well to get away down the right after help from Rowlands but his attempt hit the side- netting. Another young substitute saw Corey Hansford replace Ford who, like his team mates, had given their all. Newport headed over an 82nd minute corner before Player of the Match Field kept Aber in it with another good save. 86 minutes saw Zach O'Brien replace Harri Jones but the visitors were again thwarted in injury time by another Field save. So it finished 1-0 to the side 2 divisions higher than Aberdare, everyone associated with the hosts should be well pleased with the promise and ability shown by such a young squad. Team: Dan Field, Jordan Jones, Jack Ford (Corey Hansford ‘73), Sam Weaver, Liam Miles, Aaron Rowling, Leon Jacka, Shay Welch (Southern Rowlands ‘53), Connor Berry, Cameran Sage, Harri Jones (Zach o’Brian ‘86) Sub not used: Hadley Taylor
Player of the match Dan Field was awarded the man of the match award for an excellent display in goal
